(Dan Liu)

Wikimedia Commons

Paul’s Admonition to Stop Passing Judgment (Dan Liu)

Rembrandt (1606-1669), The Apostle Paul, c. 1657, marked as public domain, more details on Wikimedia Commons

In mainstream discussions regarding the Christian faith, Jesus’ admonition to “do not judge, or you too will be judged” (New International Version Bible, 2011, Matt 7:1), often gets quoted. Sometimes we avoid deeper discussions on what Jesus meant because the topic is broad and demands diligent study. Just recently, I was asked to consider the topic of creating for others a communal space free of the fear of being judged, based on Paul’s admonition in Romans 14:13, “Therefore let us stop passing judgment on one another. Instead, make up your mind not to put any stumbling block or obstacle in the way of a brother or sister.” What did Paul mean when he admonished the believers in Rome? While a comprehensive discussion of Jesus’ view on what we can judge or not is beyond the scope of this blog article, here I will discuss some of the historical circumstances of Paul’s life in order to contribute to understanding what he may have meant when he cautioned the Roman disciples to “stop passing judgment on one another.”

(Antony Wong)

[2]NLT Study Bible on John 21:15 ~ “more than these? Or more than these others do? Jesus was reminding Peter of his insistence that he would be more faithful and courageous than the others (13:37; Matt 26:33; Mark 14:29). He was urging Peter to examine himself.”[3]NIV Study Bible on John 21:15 ~ “more than these. May mean “more than you love these men” or “more than these men love me” or his fishing business, indicative of his current life. Perhaps the second is best, for Peter had claimed a devotion above that of the others (Mt 26:33; Mk 14:29; cf. Jn 13:37). Peter did not take up the comparison, and Jesus did not explain it.”[4]ESV Study Bible on John 21:15 ~ “Jesus’ question, “do you love me more than these?” probably means, “Do you love me more than these other disciples do?” rather than, “Do you love me more than these fish [i.e., his profession]?” or “Do you love me more than you love these men?”—though all three senses are, of course, important.”[5]Amplified Bible on John 21:15 ~ “… Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of John, do you love Me more than these [others do—with total commitment and devotion]?…”。

(Chervy Chan)

Did Nicodemus Become a Disciple of Jesus?

Jesus and Nicodemus. Henry Ossawa Tanner, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons

Many of us in our fellowship community have been reading the Bible daily in a two-year plan. In this blog post, I will take the time to investigate an intriguing character encountered in John, Nicodemus, a Pharisee and “member of the Jewish ruling council” (New International Version Bible, 2011, John 3:1). Jesus himself called Nicodemus “Israel’s teacher” (John 3:10). A question about Nicodemus that Bible scholars have explored and that interests me is, did Nicodemus ever truly commit to following Jesus? What does the text say? Let’s go back to the Gospel of John, take a look at the three times that Nicodemus is mentioned there, and see what answers may be found there.
